You're standing in the port of Ancona, in front of the Arch of Trajan. Take a good look at its proportions. The arch rises about eighteen and a half metres, yet the opening itself is only three metres wide. It sits on a tall podium, with a broad flight of steps leading up to it. On each side you'll see a pair of fluted Corinthian columns. Up top, on the attic, the inscriptions are still legible today.
