You're standing on Mount Ithome, about eight hundred metres high, in the heart of Messenia in Greece. Notice how flat the summit is. Now take a look around. To the east, the whole valley of the Pamisos river spreads out, with the Taygetus mountains behind it. To the south, you can see the Gulf of Messenia. Kalamata is about twenty-five kilometres that way.
