You're standing at Sonneberg Observatory, high up on the Erbisbühl hill in the Neufang district, some 638 metres above sea level. Have a look at the buildings around you. That metal skin isn't just for show. In the 1970s every building was clad in aluminium sheets, for insulation and to keep out the weather. See the domes? The main building from 1960 has two of them, eight and five metres across. Since 1994 the whole site has been a listed monument.
