You're standing at the Paphos Archaeological Park, in the Kato Pafos neighbourhood. Beneath your feet lies Nea Paphos, which simply means New Paphos. It was founded in the late fourth century BC. The old city, Palaepaphos near today's Kouklia, had a harbour that had become useless. So Nikokles, the last ruler of the city-kingdom of Paphos, built a new deep-water port right here. Not all of the first residents came by choice. Some were forcibly moved in from the city of Marion.
