You're standing among the remains of Kamarina, an ancient Greek city on the south coast of Sicily, just south of the village of Scoglitti. Have a look around. The city sat between two rivers, and the Hipparis, today's Ippari, worked as a natural moat. At its mouth the Greeks dug a harbour channel, and you can still make it out. Trading ships used it right up to Roman times.
