You're standing at the Banditaccia, the great Etruscan necropolis of Cerveteri, in the Italian region of Lazio. Necropolis literally means city of the dead, and that's exactly how it feels. Take a look at those round mounds around you. They're burial mounds, known as tumuli. Beneath each one lies a tomb, carved out of the soft tuff rock underground.
