You're standing at the Cave of the Apocalypse, roughly halfway up the mountain on the Greek island of Patmos. This is the steep road between the harbour of Skala and the little town of Chóra. Take a look up. On the very highest point sits the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian. With its towers and battlements, it looks more like a castle than a monastery. That was the idea, because pirates were a real threat here for a long time. Around it, the white houses of Chóra cling to narrow, sloping lanes.
