You're standing at the Pietra di Bismantova, the Stone of Bismantova. Take a good look at that shape. Out of the green hills of the Apennines rises a lone block of rock, its walls dropping almost straight down. They tower about three hundred metres above the surrounding land. On top sits a narrow, elongated plateau, roughly a kilometre long and two hundred and forty metres wide. The highest point is 1,047 metres above sea level. Geologists call this an inselberg, literally an island mountain, standing all alone above the landscape.
