You're standing at the Château de Foix, perched high on a rock above the river Ariège, keeping watch over the little town below. Look up at the towers. There are three of them. The two square towers are the oldest. The round one is the baby of the family, added only in the fifteenth century. The spot was no accident. From up there, the rulers could control the way into the upper Ariège valley and keep an eye on the lowlands all around.
