You're standing at Winchester Castle, or at least at what's left of it. William the Conqueror built one of England's very first Norman castles here in 1067. He didn't pick the spot at random. Around the year 70, the Romans had already thrown up a huge earth rampart here, with a fort on top to guard their town. For more than a hundred years, England was ruled from this hill. Later, a stone keep held the royal treasury and the famous Domesday Book.
