You're standing at the ruins of Château Gaillard, high on a limestone rock above Les Andelys. First, look down. About ninety metres below you, the Seine swings round in a wide bend. In the Middle Ages that river was a vital trade route, and whoever held this rock kept an eye on the whole valley.
