You're standing at the remains of Caulonia, an ancient Greek city on the Ionian Sea, right by Monasterace. First, take a look at the water. Back then the shoreline lay about three hundred metres further out. From around 400 BC the seafloor sank and the land rose, until the first century AD. On the seabed off this coast, more than a hundred fluted columns have been found. They once stood on a broad, curving headland. Just north of here is Punta Stilo, the Cape of Columns. Now you know where the name comes from.
