You're standing by the Castle of Almourol, and what a spot it is: a rocky islet right in the middle of the Tagus River. Look at how the walls and towers seem to grow straight out of the granite. That rock rises about eighteen metres above the water. The islet itself is roughly three hundred metres long and less than eighty metres wide. Just upstream, the Zêzere River flows into the Tagus, and across the water lies the town of Tancos.
