You're standing in the Serra da Coroa, the hill country around Vinhais in northeastern Portugal. Across the border in Spain, the very same range goes by the name Sierra de la Culebra. Have a look around. This isn't a jagged alpine wall but a long, even chain of medium-height mountains. It runs for about ninety-five kilometres, all the way into the Spanish province of Zamora. Its highest point, Peña Mira, sits on the Spanish side at 1,243 metres.
