You're standing at the Abbey of Saint John in Müstair, in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. Tradition says Charlemagne founded it around 780. More likely, a bishop of Chur did, perhaps on Charlemagne's orders. The abbey sat on the Alpine pass route from Italy, and it was fortified to control that pass. Since 1983 it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
