You're standing at the Gouffre de Padirac, a huge chasm in the ground in the Lot department of France, not far from the town of Gramat. Walk up to the edge and look down. This hole is about thirty-three metres across and a full hundred and three metres deep. What you're looking into is the inside of a cave whose roof collapsed at some point. Nobody knows exactly when.
