You're standing at Arbeia, a Roman fort in South Shields, on a rise above the mouth of the River Tyne. Take a look at that sturdy stone gate with its towers. It isn't actually Roman, but it was rebuilt in 1986 right where the original stood. It gives you an instant feel for what this place once looked like.
