You're standing at Hovgården, on the island of Adelsö in Lake Mälaren. In the Viking Age, kings and chieftains are believed to have ruled the area from here. Just south of Adelsö lies the island of Björkö, home to Birka, the oldest town in Sweden and an international trading post. Together with Birka, Hovgården became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993.
