You're standing at Inverness Castle, high above the River Ness. Start with the colour. That warm red is sandstone, and with its battlements the castle looks properly medieval. Yet the building in front of you was only finished in 1836, to a design by William Burn. If you're at the front, you'll spot a round tower on the left and a square one on the right. In the middle there's an arched doorway, with three round-headed windows and a battlement above it.
