You're standing at Lichtenstein Castle, high on the steep edge of the Swabian Jura in southern Germany. The castle sits at 817 metres, about 250 metres above the valley of the little river Echaz. Look at those turrets and battlements. It looks like a medieval fortress, but it's really a romantic dream from the nineteenth century. It was built between 1840 and 1842 in Gothic Revival style, designed by Carl Alexander Heideloff. The name means something like shining stone.
