Castle of Ioannina in Ioannina Municipality

You're standing at Ioannina Castle, the walled old town on a rocky headland jutting into Lake Pamvotis. Take a look at those massive walls. Most of what you see dates from the early nineteenth century, when Ali Pasha had the whole thing rebuilt. He kept as much of the old Byzantine walls as he could and put a new wall in front of them. The gap between was filled with rubble or turned into arched galleries, creating a wide terrace on top where cannon could be placed. The work was finished in 1815.
