You're standing at Alatskivi Castle, about forty kilometres north of Tartu. Take a good look at it. Turrets, pointed roofs, wings of different heights: it's as if someone dropped a piece of Scotland into the Estonian countryside. And that's more or less what happened. In 1875 Baron Arved von Nolcken visited Balmoral, Queen Victoria's castle in Scotland. He was so taken with it that he rebuilt his own manor in the same style, to his own designs. It was finished in 1885, on a rather more modest scale than the original. One writer even called it a mock-English castle.
