You're standing at the Château de Montségur, high on a rocky peak in the foothills of the Pyrenees, about eighty kilometres southwest of Carcassonne. Take a look around. The ruins sit at roughly twelve hundred metres, on a rock locals call a pog, an old Occitan word for a peak. The name Montségur comes from the Latin mons securus, meaning safe hill. That turned out to be a rather ironic name.
