You're standing at the Alcántara Bridge, a Roman bridge that has linked the two banks of the Tagus for almost two thousand years. Look at its six stone arches. The widest spans 28.8 metres, while the two by the riverbanks are under fourteen. The bridge was originally 190 metres long; today it measures 181.7. Even the town's name is about this bridge. Alcántara comes from the Arabic al-Qanṭarah, which means the arch.
