You're standing on top of the Hohenstaufen, a cone-shaped mountain 684 metres high near Göppingen. This is where one of Germany's most famous castles once stood. Take a look around. Not much of the castle is left, but the mountain itself tells part of the story. The word Stauf means a drinking cup or beaker, a nod to the rounded, upturned shape of this hill. On either side lie the valleys of the Rems and the Fils, two tributaries of the Neckar.
