You're standing at the Cave of Niaux, in the Ariège region of southwestern France. Take a look around. You're in a steep-sided valley, and the hill in front of you is riddled with passages. This cave is part of a bigger system that also includes the Sabart and Lombrives caves. Together they add up to more than fourteen kilometres of tunnels and chambers underground.
