You're standing at the Grotto of Massabielle in Lourdes, the very heart of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes. First, look at the rock above the grotto. It rises about twenty-seven metres. Its old name was La Tute aux cochons, the pigs' shelter, because herders had kept their pigs here for as long as anyone could remember. A place for animals, then, not exactly a place for prayer.
