You're standing at Leivithra, on the eastern foot of Mount Olympus, the mountain of the Greek gods. The sea is a few kilometres away, and the little village of Skotina lies just to the south. Look at the hill. Up there stood the acropolis of an ancient Macedonian city, ringed by a wall and tucked between two small rivers. People lived on it from the eighth to the first century BC, and the area around it was settled as far back as the Bronze Age. What finally destroyed the city is still a mystery. Most likely an earthquake, perhaps followed by a flood.
