You're standing in Kostanjevica na Krki, a small town in southern Slovenia, in the foothills of the Gorjanci Hills and close to the Croatian border. Look around and you'll understand its nickname: the Venice of Lower Carniola. The town centre sits on an island in the Krka River. Most of that island is formed by a bend in the river, but on one side there's a channel that was dug back in the thirteenth century. In 2020, just 689 people lived here.
