You're standing at Kastelli, the hill above Chania's old harbour. It looks like an ordinary neighbourhood of narrow lanes, but under your feet lies Kydonia, one of the oldest cities on Crete. Archaeologists have found pottery here running from the Neolithic to the very end of the Minoan age. Since 2025, the site has been part of UNESCO's World Heritage listing of Minoan palatial centres.
