You're standing at the wooden articular church of Hronsek, a Lutheran church in a small Slovak village. Start with its shape. The church is laid out as a cross, with one arm twenty-three metres long and the other eighteen. At just eight metres tall, it's low, but broad and solid. The roof is covered in wooden shingles. Oak crosses crown three sides, and above one entrance sits a rooster, a symbol of Christian vigilance. Notice anything missing? There's no bell tower. That's no accident.
