You're standing at Haus Wahnfried, the villa of composer Richard Wagner here in Bayreuth. He lived here for the last decade of his life, together with his wife Cosima. Take a look at the entrance. Wagner had a motto carved into the stone there: 'Hier wo mein Wähnen Frieden fand – Wahnfried – sei dieses Haus von mir benannt.' Roughly: here, where my delusions found peace, let this house be named Wahnfried. Wahn means delusion or madness, Friede means peace. Back then, the locals found it rather funny.
