You're standing at Mystras, a late Byzantine ghost town on a slope of the Taygetus mountains. Look up. Right at the top of the ridge are the remains of a castle. Below it, churches, monasteries, houses and a palace cling to the steep hillside, between pines and cypresses. Down in the valley lies modern Sparta.
