You're standing at the entrance of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, in the Polish town of Oświęcim. This is a place that makes people go quiet, and that's perfectly fine. This was Auschwitz I, the main camp built and run by Nazi Germany during its occupation of Poland. Around 1.1 million people died at Auschwitz, among them 960,000 Jews.
