You're standing at the Citadel of Besançon, an eleven-hectare fortress high on Mount Saint-Etienne. Take a look down. The river Doubs makes a big loop around the old town here, and this hill closes off that loop like a cork in a bottle. Julius Caesar already saw how clever a spot this was, back in 58 BC. In Roman times a temple stood here, probably dedicated to Jupiter. A few of its columns are still standing.
