You're standing at Akanthos, or rather at what's left of it. This ridge with its three hilltops, just southeast of the village of Ierissos, once carried an entire Greek city, roughly the size of today's village. Take a look around between the trees. You'll spot remains of a circuit wall that stood eight metres high, a citadel and buildings from the Hellenistic era. There's also a deserted Byzantine church, plus two churches from the centuries after.
