You're standing on the Alto de Castro, a hilltop more than a thousand metres up in the province of Burgos. This is where Clunia once stood, one of the most important Roman cities in northern Spain. Take a look around. Between the little villages of Peñalba de Castro and Coruña del Conde lie the remains of a city that, at its peak, was home to around thirty thousand people. It covered almost one and a quarter square kilometres, making it one of the largest cities in Roman Spain.
