You're standing at the Effelsberg radio telescope, in the hills of the Eifel near Bad Münstereifel. Take a look at that huge white dish. It's a hundred metres across, and it can turn and tilt to follow any patch of sky. For twenty-nine years this was the largest fully steerable radio telescope on Earth. Only in 2000 did the Green Bank Telescope in the United States take the title, with a dish that's slightly larger and a little oval.
