You're standing at the Clifton Suspension Bridge, hanging high above the gorge of the River Avon. Take a look down first. The deck sits about seventy-five metres above the water at high tide. Between the two towers there's more than two hundred metres, with nothing holding it up in the middle. Brunel's own father didn't think that could work and told him to add a central support. Young Isambard simply ignored him.
