You're standing at Tsarevets, the medieval fortress on the hill of the same name in Veliko Tarnovo. Have a look at the heavy walls wrapped around the whole hill. In places they're up to 3.6 metres thick. Anyone who wanted to get in had to pass through three gates, and the main one, perched on a narrow ridge of rock, even had a drawbridge.
