You're standing among the remains of Metapontum, once one of the wealthiest Greek cities in southern Italy. Take a look at the wide, flat coastline around you. This is the Gulf of Taranto, and you're between two rivers, the Bradano and the Basento. Around 700 BC, Greek settlers from Achaea made their home right here. The legends go even further. One story says the city was founded by Epeius, the man who built the Trojan Horse. The locals even showed off his tools in one of their temples.
