You're standing at the Troy Museum, near the village of Tevfikiye in northwestern Turkey. The ruins of ancient Troy lie about 800 metres to the west. Take a good look at the building first. It's a big cube, four floors high, wrapped in rust-coloured weathering steel. That's no accident. The architects wanted it to look as if it had been dug out of the excavation itself. And here's a lovely detail: the building is exactly as tall as the dig at Troy is deep. It gives you a feel for just how many layers of history were uncovered there.
