You're standing at Caerlaverock Castle, in the south-west of Scotland, close to the coast. First, take in the shape. This castle is a triangle, and that's very rare. There are only a handful across Europe, and this is the only one in the UK. It's surrounded by a moat and earth ramparts, which is also unusual for Scotland. Straight ahead, at the northern tip, is the gatehouse with two massive round towers, about fifteen metres tall. There used to be a drawbridge here. Today a fixed bridge takes you in.
