You're standing at the former abbey of Ebrach, in the Franconian part of Bavaria. Start with the west front of the church. Above the Gothic doorway sits a huge rose window, more than seven and a half metres across, made around 1280. Its builders took their cue from the north rose window of Notre-Dame in Paris. What you see is a replica, and a very faithful one. The original is kept in the Bavarian National Museum. Beside the doorway stand Mary and John the Evangelist, two of the abbey's patron saints.
