You're standing at Chepstow Castle, high on the limestone cliffs above the River Wye. This is the oldest surviving post-Roman stone fortification in Britain. Building started in 1067, on the orders of the Norman lord William FitzOsbern. Back then it was called Striguil, from a Welsh word meaning river bend.
