You're standing at the Lagavulin distillery, in the little village of the same name on the south coast of the Scottish island of Islay. Take a good sniff. Lagavulin is famous for a whisky that smells of peat smoke and iodine, and sometimes that smell simply hangs in the air here. The name comes from the Scottish Gaelic Lag a' Mhuilinn, which means hollow of the mill.
