You're standing at the Fortezza, the great citadel of Rethymno on Crete. Look at those long, low walls wrapping around the hill. Together they run for more than thirteen hundred metres, following the rock in an irregular line. The hill is called Paleokastro, the old castle. In ancient times, this was the acropolis of Rhithymna.
