You're standing at Dirleton Castle, right in the heart of the village of Dirleton. The castle sits on a rocky outcrop, looking out over the farmland of East Lothian. From here it guarded the coastal route between England and Edinburgh. Look at the south side. That's the gatehouse, with its tall pointed arch. There used to be a deep ditch here with a drawbridge. Today you walk in across a modern bridge. To the left rise the round towers of the thirteenth-century keep.
